Behind closed doors presentatie op de gamescom

The Sims Medieval: Exclusive presentation by the developers

Next year will start absolutely regally for the Sims. In their own game an exciting epoch of history awaits you which is awash with adventures. An entire kingdom is at your beck and call and should be reigned with caution.

The Sims become heroes who leave their mark in real dramas or romantic experiences. History itself will be continually made through the adventure whereby the whole range of decisions should be exploited. It is thus up to the player whether he wants ruthless rulers, despicable scoundrels, pugnacious heroes or friendly, sensitive and kind-hearted Sims to reign over the castle, land and the people. Special capabilities help the Sims to steer the fortunes of their kingdom. One major goal takes priority over everything else: Prosperity or enlightenment? Peace mission or warmongering? The player decides in which direction his empire should develop.

The medieval setting

Today we had the honor of witnessing a presentation by the developers behind closed doors about The Sims: Medieval. In a room that was very cosily furnished with a fake fireplace, knight’s armour and red walls a game that was equally relaxing awaited us – at least in the first few minutes. It was initially possible to gain an impression of the setting of the demo version thanks to the bird’s eye perspective. Attention was paid to every detail here. The Middle Ages as a rather cheerless epoch was created with a lot of fantasy as was demonstrated by the textures of the buildings, the special trees or the ingenious interior fittings of the rooms. Nothing was missing. The witch tower, church, castle, apothecary and many more things round off this village backdrop. No details were spared in relation to the Sims either. The range of clothing seems almost inexhaustible. You can choose between a modest citizen’s garment, knight’s armour, a magician’s cape or magnificent regal outfits and play to your heart’s content with accessories such as belts or jewellery.

What is The Sims Medieval like to play?

The demonstration by the developers was exciting. The Sims do things that they have never done before. This also includes the combat which is represented by your own combat system in the game. As previously each Sim character has their own personality and they make the decisions for themselves. This is particularly noticeable in the quests which you will constantly face. For instance you come across a man who is publically on display. Do you throw eggs and tomatoes at him or do you show some compassion and quickly free him from his wretched situation? The tasks can involve marrying someone, having a baby or also curing the king of his severe illness. The game is very varied due to the quests.

A typical task in the game for instance involves producing a remedy for the king. Other Sims become involved in the game here. You always require the support of others who help you to progress. There are numerous professions which manufacture different produces due to the crafting system. You visit the herb lady and the priest afterwards to acquire a remedy for the sick king. If you are successful he will possibly even marry his saviour before the altar.

The Sims and their health

We particularly enjoyed the renditions concerning the welfare of the Sims. The methods of combating disease were often very risky in the deepest Middle Ages. Strange furniture and unusual tinctures are present at the herb lady’s home. We don’t want to give away too much just now but are grateful that the Sim character in the presentation came through the drastic remedy without any ill effects. The Sims: Medieval will be coming out in March 2011.
